The construction of the new carpentry block
is now complete. Huge thanks to Grimbergen Noordemeer, who sponsored
the project and to the Economic Housing Group for the donation of 10
tool boxes. The benefits of this project are threefold: enhanced
vocational training, leading to better work opportunities; the ability
to make wooden items needed at the Shelter itself; and production of
woodwork that we can sell at local craft fairs to raise funds. 11 boys have graduated with carpentry skills.
Thanks to sponsorship by Grimbergen Noordemeer
and Hobra Manufacturing, the construction of a metalwork and mechanics workshop is now complete.
We are extremely lucky to have a borehole and thanks to Stokman Rozen all buildings have gutters and water storage tanks.
We have made another vegetable garden which includes cow candy for our
cows and donkeys. We have not had any rain and pray that we will get
some soon but have planted more trees in preperation. |

| Boys’ News |
Six boys Graduated this year all with carpentry and bead making skills. Find out more about them in Our Children. 4 boys have just sat the Government Carpentry Test.
We are confident that they have done well and plan to send them for
attachment so that they can go for the next grade. Another 1st step for
the Shelter. We
now have a total of 12 boys studying at the local Government School and
are hugely proud of their latest academic results! Elijah and John have just completed 1st year in Secondary School

| Animal News |
Sadly,
we lost our male donkey Jack, but the good news is that Jill has gave
birth to a baby donkey. The boys have called him Jack Junior. He has
turned out to be very naughty. Our geese were causing havoc so we have built
them a small pond to keep them out of trouble and they are much happier
with somewhere to play! We now have 15. |

| Event Highlights |
| London Adventist Chorale visit the Shelter |
The
London Adventist Chorale are a UK choral group who perform all over the
world. Having visited the Shelter two years ago, they made time on
their busy tour to call in again and gave a spontaneous performance to
the boys, along with members of the University of Nairobi Choral Group,
also travelling with them. The event was a real highlight and brought
tears to the eyes of many of us there. Thank you! |
| CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR -
This weekend we have been invited by the big Christmas Fair in Nairobi
to have a free stall to sell our Crafts. 6 boys will stay 2 nights in
the big city. This is a very exciting venture for them. We did really
well last year. |
Hells Gate Wheelbarrow Race 2009 We won a trophy for best wheelbarrow

Lake Naivasha Fishing Competition, NCS Annual Football Tournament
The fishing competition used to be our major fundraiser but now the
lake is too shallow. This year we had 10 teams enter the Football
Tournament 2 day event which was kindly sponsored by Heritage AII Insurance & Skylark Insurance.
The Maridadi Flowers team won. Thanks to Brian Scheepers of Maridadi
who helped coordinate the event and Jack Kneppers for use of Maridadi
football field. The Shelter team tried very hard but the other
teams were much bigger than them. Each team was given a football by Alive and Kicking |

| A Dangerous Moment for Debbie |
| Debbie,
founder and trustee of the Shelter, had a close encounter with
one of our cows that landed her flat on her back! The attempt to
demonstrate to the boys that the cow was not aggressive backfired when
the cow head-butted and threw her across the field. She was on crutches, now OK but her
relationship with the cow is not what it was. Click here to see some of the cartoons drawn by the boys depicting the event. |
