Julius Mwaniki
Julius was only five when he was picked from the streets in very bad shape; he was smoking a cigarette when we found him. He had taken to the streets at the age of three to escape the beatings he received from his mother after his parents were divorced and his father left Naivasha. Now seven, Julius is a very bright boy, with a mischievous sense of humour. He still sees his mother and one brother, and he knows that he has another brother and two sisters that he has never met. He says he likes football, chips and gardening.

Lawrence Okunu
Lawrence is eleven years old and only joined the Shelter in January 2006, having spent about six months on the street. His father had died, his mother had no work and there was no food at home. He was brought to the Shelter by a friend who is also here. Lawrence has settled in very quickly. He likes and is good at maths and his dream is to become an engineer and earn lots of money!

Morrison Ndung’u
Morrison, now thirteen, is the younger brother of Paul Chege. The two brothers took to the streets at the age of ten and eleven because their father had died and their mother did not have enough food to feed the five children left behind. They spent six months on the street before joining the Shelter in 2004. Morrison has settled in well and is enthusiastic about everything. He likes gardening, football, English, rabbits and maths, and he would like to work in a bank.

Nding’uri Njoroge
Ndin’uri is a sweet shy nine-year-old, whose parents died of AIDS, leaving him and his brother, Joseph Ng’ang’a, also at the Shelter, in the care of their grandmother. She couldn’t cope and the Church told the Shelter of their plight, so they both came here in 2005 at the age of eight and eleven. Nding’uri likes maths and is very good at it. He has progressed so well academically that he has just joined the local state school. His real passion is cooking and he would love to become a cook and have two children of his own.

Noah Mukuna
Noah took to the street at the age of twelve to look for food. His father had died and his elder brother had also served time on the street before joining the Shelter. After three months on the street, we were able to take Noah in so he joined the Shelter in 2005. He is a very shy but sweet boy who likes football and English and dreams of becoming a mechanic one day.

Patrick Mwangi
Patrick, now fifteen, was only eight when he started living on the street. The death of his parents left seven children with only a grandmother to look after them and she was unable to feed them all. Patrick was taken to the street by two of his brothers, one of whom is now in jail, while the other is still on the street. One more brother still lives with the grandmother and the three sisters have got married. Patrick spent a year on the street before attending the EAWL feeding and teaching programme but he still had to sleep on the street until he was able to move in to the newly built Shelter in 2003. He is a sweet boy but obviously badly scarred and still avoids eye contact. He is good at maths and loves acrobatics and football. He would like to become a welder and have a family with just two children.

Paul Chege
Paul was twelve when he came to the Shelter two years ago, having spent six months on the street where he sold scrap metal for food. His brother, Morrison Ndungu is also at the Shelter; the two brothers left home after their father died and their mother was unable to feed them. Paul is very bright and achieved fifth position out of a class of forty three at the local state school he is attending. He is also good at acrobatics and likes gardening. His dream is to become an accountant in Mombasa.
